Basic Do's and Don'ts of Oral Hygiene: Oral health is frequently neglected when discussing the general health of your body. Most people would go to the emergency department if they had a high temperature, nausea, or chest pains. Oral pain, however, is often treated with home remedies or “waited” out until the pain subsides. But, left unchecked, dental problems can have a negative impact on everyday functions including nutrition, mandibular function, and communication.

Keep reading to learn the do’s and don'ts to maintain good oral health.

WHAT TO DO:

Regular Brushing

Brushing your teeth twice a day is the number step to having good dental hygiene. The best times to brush are first thing in the morning and just before going to bed.

It's crucial to brush your teeth as soon as you wake up to stimulate saliva production and get rid of all overnight bacterial buildup. Brushing the evening helps you get rid of any food particles or bacteria accumulated throughout the day, making brushing your teeth before bed essential.

Flossing

Our teeth can accumulate a good amount of bacteria and food particles around the teeth and beneath the gum line. This makes it challenging for regular toothbrushes to reach these areas. Because of this, including flossing in your dental routine is essential. Dental floss eliminates the food and germs wedged between teeth and in the gum line by scraping them out and halting bacterial development and plaque buildup.

WHAT TO AVOID:

Smoking

Did you know that smoking can lead to tooth discoloration? In addition to changing the color of your smile, it will have a direct impact on your gum's general health. Smoking typically causes your gum line to recede. This will lead to tooth decay and fallout.

Avoid Sugary Foods

Sugar is your adversary when it comes to maintaining good oral health. Sugar feeds bacteria and provides it with nourishment. Sticky foods like toffees, can also contribute to dental decay because they trap bacteria on the surface of your teeth, where it can grow. If you do choose to overindulge in sugary foods, be sure to brush your teeth as soon as possible.

Avoid Acidic Foods

Acid weakens teeth by dissolving tooth enamel. Acidic food and drink consumption can cause teeth to become sensitive and discolored. To prevent this, wash your mouth with water or mouthwash after consuming certain foods or drinks. It's also a good practice to wait at least 30 minutes before brushing to give your teeth time to remineralize.
